8/08/08 – 12:23pm (immortal: the movie)
i’ve decided to start trying to make more of an effort to contribute to this blog as much as possible so i’ve come up with some ideas to fall back on when i seem to have absolutely no idea what to write.
i’ll have a ‘photo of the month’ (inspired by Anas K) – ‘a movie review of the month,’ – ‘poem of the month’ – ‘quote of the month,’ – ‘book of the month,’ and ‘music video of the month.’
when i need to fall back on these i will. otherwise this blog is from now on dedicated to the study of Chaos, Hermetics, Demonology, The Goetica and all things concerning Eris; Goddess ov Discord.
so to kick it off i rented a movie the other day titled: ‘IMMORTAL.’ it caught my eye because of the floating pyramid on the cover, and when i flipped it over to check out the plotline i saw that it was about my favorite Egyptian God; Horus. so i took it home, took a looksie and here’s my thoughts on the movie: (i’ll be using the review of a Christopher Null with my comments shoved in between his in red italics):
now this is what reviewer: Christopher Null had to say about it…
Immortal is another one of those movies with sets built completely out of CGI. Yeah, they’re already getting to be a little old and trite, but hey, it’s a new technology, so let’s have fun before it fully burns out.
Straight up, understand that Immortal is as close to nonsense as a movie can get. (well, i wouldnt say ‘nonsense’ the movie makes complete sense to me, i think what he means is that the plot is rather chaotic and doesnt give you much of a history to understand where and what is going on. after the first half hour tho, if you pay attention at all you’ll pick it up as i did.) The story, as much as it has one, takes place in the distant future, where cybernetics and flying cars are commonplace. Poof: A pyramid appears hovering over the city, and the Egyptian god Horus appears to make trouble. As the film develops, Horus tries to use a human to impregnate a woman with blue hair. (see Horus has 7 days to find a human host before he dies. yes, even Gods can die. he goes thru quite a few hosts trying to find one whos body isnt tainted with cybernetics or implants, when they reject his spirit, they explode. which is rather neat to see. blood and guts going kablooie every which way.)
Half of the actors in the film are real, half are CGI — and crudely animated at that. (yes, that i was quite peeved by. but the story is still interesting enough to bare with it. think half movie, half video game interlude.) With a (near-cameo) appearance from Charlotte Rampling and a former Miss France in the lead role, there’s some attempt to give the film some street cred. But this falls away when we realize how silly the movie is, with it’s cornball dialogue (“You are so full of shit, Horus!”) and wholly absurd plot. (we’ll if your a little pinky brained doof, sure the plot is absurd. of course if you have half the mind to realize that everytime civilization has evolved it has done so with leaps and bounds that couldnt have even been imagined. the future is more advanced than we think, as it has always been. and cornball dialogue? ok Chris, but as the Joker says: ‘why so serious?’ it is a feckin movie!)
Based on a popular French comic book (possibly the only French comic book as far as I know), Immortal has a built-in fan base who will obviously find the familiar visuals thrilling when they’re in a moving setting. Everyone else will probably find the film trite and confusing — if they make it to the end at all. (well, if you like ancient Egyptian culture and history or any ‘god myth’ at all – i think you’ll find some enjoyment in this movie. i think its worth the .99 cent 1 day rental, or whatever cheap ass price your local video store will charge you for a not so new B-movie release. perfect for the neo-pagan trapped inside by an 8 foot snow drift, or just a rainy sunday afternoon.)
heres the link to amazon to purchase the movie or just read the 60+ other reviews and check out the nifty cover art:

Immortal is one of the few films I’ve enjoyed for quite a while.
It was a new approach for me and I loved the poems in the film.
I thought the lead actors worked very well for their parts in the film
and I enjoyed every moment of the film.
I am hoping to see a continuation of the film but even if that doesn’t happen,
what I have from original film will surfice. I thought the director was brilliant.
It made me want to go out and own the DVD which I own today along with a private collection of DVD’s that I love. So far you are the only blogger I’ve seen to talk about this movie and I think you should expand your blog and discuss it some more.
This will help to bring the movie on the top of Google.
I absolutely loved this movie and I can’t wait to see more movies from this director.
Thank you for taking the time to write this blog.
